How to Make a Pop Rocket

 You will need:
-an M & M container or a Fuji film canister.
-Alka-Seltzer tablets
-optional:  seltzer water or soda

We used Alk-Seltzer Cold Plus because we had that on hand. It worked very well but I think it would be interesting to compare it to regular Alka-Seltzer. Would there be any differences in this experiment? 

We took this outside and I’m glad we did, because there was a lot of spray-action from this experiment. We repeated it over and over again, figuring out what gave our rocket the most height.  I will give you a hint: it has to do with the amount of liquid. Do you think more liquid or less liquid will shoot the rocket higher?  

In the course of our experiment, we found that detaching the lid from the M&M container gave our rocket more upward trajectory. With the lid attached, it tended to shoot off to the side.

Step 1:  Pour the liquid into the container. Do you think the water or the seltzer made the rocket go higher?

 Step 2:  Put on your safety goggles. Add the Alka-Seltzer tablets. Experiment with adding them whole or in pieces, adding 1 or 2 or 3 at a time, shaking or not shaking the container. Then set it down with the cap on the ground and quickly move away.

Watch it pop! Our pop rocket easily flew 8 to 10 feet in the air.
